I really debated on showing these images or not. I just want to tell the story of my adventure to the Panama Canal. It was nearing the end of my trip and I was looking forward to the canal and seeing it and all its grandeur. My friend who had went before told me to go in the afternoon when the ships were passing through the locks so I left around Noon and headed there. I get to the canal and the driver drops me off and I started to wander to take pictures and the heavens opened up on me. So instead of wandering I headed toward the main building. I discovered that all my lenses had fogged from sitting in air con for too long and with the heat and humidity of Panama it was playing havoc on the glass. So I found a ledge outside to try and change lenses to something that wasn’t fogged up. I started getting yelled at that I could not take pictures where I was. I explained that my glass was fogged and I am trying to change lenses on a level surface. This went on for about 3 minutes to a Panamanian woman that spoke fluent, non-accented English. She finally relented and told me to come inside when I was done. I finally get that resolved and come inside and she immediately directs me to the ticket booth. No problem, was going to do that anyways. I pay my $15 and head back inside. The disappointment was about to set in.
I don’t want to ruin the Panama Canal experience for anyone but its a horrible tourist trap. The reason why I was being yelled at about taking pictures, is because the first image you see is the exact same one you PAY to see inside. The ship sitting in the holding lake is what you can see if you walked to the other side of the building without PAYING. Short of the building that says Miraflores Lock and the lock itself, thats it. There is three floors of a crap museum. A crap theater that shows you how the canal runs or something (totally skipped it), and viewing platforms that you have to go through the crap museum to get to. Ships come through at erratic times which are repeated constantly with a MAYBE because things aren’t scheduled. I spent 90 minutes there and it was the worst place of my trip. You could not wander around and trust me, there is some cool stuff on the grounds but you are confined to the canal area which amounts to a four story building of crap.
I think the pictures reflect my mood at the experience. I would say enjoy but….
